Lousander Feen and Michael W. Dean spend Ludwig Von Mises’ birthday talking about The Free Rangers, the new open-source non-statist alternative for kids. Topics include: Appleseed-ish rifle instruction, Altoids, prepping, duopoly, Sam Adams, and saving the world via DSL. Plus another wild and woolly episode of “Is it real, or is it the Onion?”

    Lousander,
I am very happy to hear about the Free Rangers. I was in Boy Scouts for two years as a little kid. I remember being excited to go camping and learn about wilderness survival but we never did those things (instead, the focus seemed to be on uniforms and stuffy, patriotic ritualism, token acts of community service, and above all else selling overpriced popcorn for the organization). I was disappointed. I did really enjoy the raingutter regatta and painting my little sailboat, but I would have loved the opportunity to go out and be in nature and actually learn things. The Free Rangers sound truly awesome though, and just like what I was looking for as a kid.

I hear ya, Sam. I was never in the scouts but if I was, I probably would have hated it for just those reasons. If you have kids and would like them to have this experience, start a group of your own. There are plenty of people that I am sure would be willing to help you out or answer any questions that you might have. Creating alternatives is how The State dies.
